Sep 22 | Women's Golf
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Women's golf is third with a 587 (299-288) total after the initial two rounds of the 16-team Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday on the Penn State Blue Course. Freshman Maeve Rossi and sophomore Harriet Allsebrook are both among the top five in the 90-player field for the Scarlet Knights, who enter Sunday's final round six strokes behind tournament leader Washington.
"Today was a full team effort and I am proud of how everyone competed," said head coach Kari Williams. "Maeve and Harriet continued their strong play for us in the afternoon and Carrie-Ann (Lee) bounced back with a nice round. We have a great opportunity tomorrow to finish off our best event of the season so far."
Playing in first position for the third time in as many events, Rossi is second with a three-under 141 (71-70) on the par 72, 6,322-yard course. She was minus two on par threes and minus one on par fours with 27 pars and six birdies. The rookie from Milan is three strokes off the pace entering the final 18.
Allsebrook, competing in the second spot for RU, is tied for 4th after carding a one-over 145 (73-72). She is minus one on par fours with 27 pars and four birdies.
"I hit a lot of greens today and while I didn't hole many putts in the opening round, I was able to make a few coming down the closing stretch in the afternoon," said Allsebrook. "We're all really excited to get back out on the course tomorrow and to compete with the lead teams."
Junior Carrie-Ann Lee and graduate co-captain Ashleigh Greenham both registered strong second rounds and enter the final round with momentum and among the top 40. Lee is tied for 30th with a 151 (79-72) and Greenham is tied for 37th with a 152 (78-74).
Senior Astrid Aneman completes the team scorecard and is tied for 66th with a 158 (77-81). Competing individually, sophomore Lori Char is tied for 79th with a 164 (80-84).
The Scarlet Knights are two strokes behind host Penn State and eight strokes ahead of fourth place Seton Hall entering the final 18 holes. Competing individually, PSU's Sarah Willis is atop the leaderboard with a six-under 138 (68-70).
The third and final round will begin via a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Live results are available via Golfstat.
