IOWA CITY, IOWA – No. 2
Anthony Ashnault (149) picked up his fifth ranked win of the season and
Joseph Grello (174) earned a victory over a NCAA qualifier as No. 20 Rutgers (7-4, 1-2) fell to No. 4 Iowa (8-0, 2-0), 30-6, Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Â
In front of 8,500 fans, Ashnault moved to 16-0 on the season with an unblemished 11-0 mark in dual action. For Grello, the win was his second conference dual victory of 2018-19, as the redshirt sophomore is now 10-5 on the year.
Â
How it Happened
• Iowa claimed eight out of 10 bouts to secure the win over the Scarlet Knights, including three by bonus.
• In his second consecutive dual against a top-10 foe, No. 3
Nick Suriano (133) dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 8 Austin DeSanto. After a scoreless first period, Suriano started period two with an escape and added a takedown for a 3-0 lead.
• With the score 3-1 after a DeSanto escape to start period three, Suriano was hit for back-to-back stall calls to make it 3-3. DeSanto then escaped for a 4-3 lead and sealed the win with a takedown for the final result.
• After
Peter Lipari (141) dropped a tight 8-4 decision to No. 15 Max Murin, Ashnault took the mat against No. 12 Pat Lugo. With the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, Ashnault worked an ankle pick for the takedown in sudden victory for the final 3-1 decision.
• No. 14
John Van Brill (157) followed with a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Kaleb Young, as Iowa owned a 14-3 lead at intermission.
• RU then dropped its match at 165 pounds before Grello faced Mitch Bowman, a 2018 NCAA qualifier. Grello had a takedown in the first minute of the match, landed a reversal in the second and picked up three consecutive points on an escape, a Bowman caution and the riding time for a 7-3 decision.
• Iowa closed out the dual with three consecutive wins at 184, 197 and heavyweight.
