Women’s Basketball Announces Exhibition at Fordham to Benefit Bahamas Hurricane Relief
Oct 18 | Women's Basketball
On Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m., $5 tickets to directly benefit the Bahamas Red Cross
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2019) – Rutgers women's basketball will play an open exhibition at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. to benefit hurricane relief in the Bahamas. Tickets will be $5 each with all proceeds directly aiding the Bahamas Red Cross in the effort to recover from Hurricane Dorian.
The originally scheduled closed scrimmage against the Rams in the Bronx was able to be converted to an open exhibition due to NCAA regulations allowing Division I programs to add a second exhibition if the funds raised for the contest benefit charity. This will be Fordham's first of two open exhibitions during the preseason.
"This transcends basketball," said head coach C. Vivian Stringer. "We have a great opportunity to come together and do something meaningful. Our players are in a wonderful position to give back to our community whenever they can, and now, to help a community in need miles from our home. We appreciate this chance to use basketball in the spirit of coming together as one and making a difference in the world."
The Scarlet Knights and Fordham are both playing regular season games in the Bahamas during the 2019-20 season. Rutgers will travel to Bimini from Nov. 28-30 to compete in the Junkanoo Jam with Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Seton Hall. The Rams will be playing in Nassau at the Bahamas Hoopfest from Nov. 29-30 opposite Arkansas and Lehigh.
Rutgers fans can help "ice" the Fordham head coach before the exhibition. If 250 tickets are sold by Monday, Oct. 21, Rams head coach Stephanie Gaitley will partake in an interview while in an ice bath.
Coach Stringer, entering her 25th year "On the Banks," currently has 499 victories as head coach at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights will officially open the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in Zipporah Broughton, Maori Davenport and Joiya Maddox's home state of Alabama against South Alabama at 8 p.m. ET.
