55 Student-Athletes Earn Chi Alpha Sigma Induction
Oct 25 | General, Development
PISCATAWAY – Fifty-five Rutgers University student-athletes from 19 different programs will be inducted into the Delta Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during the first quarter of Saturday's football game against Liberty at SHI Stadium. It signals the most Scarlet Knights inducted into the prestigious society since 57 earned inclusion into the inaugural 2005 class.
The criteria for induction to Chi Alpha Sigma requires that the student-athlete must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA or NAIA. The honoree also must achieve at least junior academic standing by the fifth semester or seventh quarter, as determined by the certifying institution, and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).
Saturday's induction comes on the heels of last week's announcement that Rutgers set a school-record with an overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 89 in the NCAA's annual report and furthers an unmistakable trend of enhanced academic performance. A school-record 276 student-athletes of at least sophomore standing earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2018-19, comprised of 145 in the spring, 46 in the winter and 85 in the fall. Among them were a school-record 87 Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholars with minimum GPAs of 3.70 or above for the academic year.
Chi Alpha Sigma is a nonprofit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. The organization was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
