PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After accounting for 310 yards and three touchdowns in the 44-34 victory over Liberty, Rutgers football quarterback
Johnny Langan was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday. The redshirt freshman went 15-for-21 passing for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 118 yards and another score.
Langan also earned national recognition by being named to the Manning Award Stars of the Week list. Fans can now go to the
Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote. When voting closes on Thursday at noon ET, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
"(Johnny) went out today and cut it loose and played like the competitor that I know he is," interim head coach
Nunzio Campanile said after the game. "He's one of the toughest human beings I've ever met and he's one of the greatest competitors I've ever met. Today (the game) slowed down for him a little bit and he played with confidence and he played like he was having fun. It was great to see him do that and I'm really happy for him and really proud of him."
Langan became the first RU quarterback to reach 100 rushing yards in a game since Sam Mudie had 105 in a 32-15 win against Lehigh on Oct. 21, 1961. He is up to 201 rushing yards this year, the most by a Rutgers quarterback in a season since Jabu Lovelace (332) in 2007. Langan has ran for 18 first downs, including nine times on third down and once on fourth down.
In the passing game, Langan found sophomore
Eddie Lewis and freshman
Isaiah Washington for his first two career touchdown passes. The 15 completions set a new personal high.
"We just really attacked this (past) week on offense," Langan said after the game. "We had our best week of practice all year. We just translated that onto the field and I'm really happy about it."
Johnathan Lewis is the only other Scarlet Knight to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week (Sept. 18, 2017).
Rutgers returns to the road to face Illinois Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. local). Big Ten Network will broadcast the game.
