Scarlet Knights jump back into national rankings at No. 21
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior forward Brittany LaPlant was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. LaPlant registered a team-leading five points (2g, 1a) to guide Rutgers to a 2-0 weekend in conference play and back into the national rankings.
On Thursday at Penn State, LaPlant evaded two defenders to tie the score 1-1. The forward then added a tremendous assist on the Scarlet Knights' second goal en route to a 3-2 victory in double overtime. It marked the most goals scored by RU in conference play with PSU and on the road at University Park.
The Queensbury, New York, native then went on to seal a 2-0 victory over Northwestern at home on Sunday. LaPlant split two defenders yet again to register the goal.
LaPlant has scored in back-to-back contests three times in her career. She has three goals and four assists on the year. Her first goal came in the 1-0 upset victory over then-No. 11 Tennessee.
The honor marks LaPlant's second career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week accolade. It marks RU's second player of the week honor this season.
Rutgers (9-2-1, 3-2-0) jumped back into the rankings following the strong weekend, returning to the Top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll at No. 21. The Scarlet Knights have ranked as high as 13 this season. RU is also ranked No. 19 by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
LaPlant and the Scarlet Knights hit the road for two Big Ten matchups this weekend, including Iowa on Friday and Nebraska on Sunday.
