Guirantes Named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Nov 11 | Women's Basketball
Redshirt junior led Scarlet Knights to 2-0 start with 44 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks
ROSEMONT, Ill. (Nov. 11, 2019) – Redshirt junior guard Arella Guirantes of Rutgers women's basketball has been named the first Big Ten Player of the Week of the 2019-20 season for her performance during Opening Week.
The weekly honor marks the fifth time the Scarlet Knights have been awarded a Big Ten Player of the Week since joining the conference for the 2014-15 season. The last Big Ten Player of the Week from Rutgers was Kahleah Copper four years ago on Nov. 16, 2015.
Guirantes netted 44 points on 15-of-34 shooting (.441) to lead a historic week for the Rutgers offense. A well-rounded stat sheet for the week included 12 rebounds, four blocks, four assists and a steal in 44 minutes of action.
She tied a career high with four 3-pointers in the season opening 77-56 victory at South Alabama on Tuesday to mark head coach C. Vivian Stringer's 500th victory at the helm of the Scarlet Knights program. That led to 27 points for the Bellport, New York native, a new career high for the shooting guard playing in her second season with Rutgers after transferring in from Texas Tech.
Guirantes chipped in 17 points in Saturday's home opening 107-33 rout of Coppin State. The 107 points were the most for Rutgers since 1989, the most at the RAC since 1988 and the most by a Coach Stringer team since 1983.
Additionally, junior wing Tekia Mack has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, based off a private selection process without nominations from conferences or its institutions.
Mack was a leading architect in Rutgers' 107-point outburst on Saturday with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with a career-high five steals on the defensive end. It was Mack's second consecutive 21-point performance to start the season after a matching 8-of-13 mark at South Alabama on Tuesday, part of her first career double-double with 11 rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. against Niagara at the RAC, the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader in Piscataway.
