Women’s Hoops Runs Past Southern for Best Start Since ‘11
Dec 12 | Women's Basketball
Scarlet Knights are 9-1 with one non-conference game remaining
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 12, 2019) – Rutgers women's basketball (9-1) never trailed in a 78-58 victory over Southern (2-5) on Thursday night at the RAC to signal the Scarlet Knights' best start to a season since 2011.
RU shot 54 percent from the floor and scored 31 points by forcing 22 Jaguar turnovers. A 15-0 scoring run in the 25-point third quarter put the game out of reach for the Jags, who were out-rebounded by Rutgers, 33-22.
"This team knows how to win, there's no question about that," said head coach C. Vivian Stringer, who improves to 20-0 in non-conference games at home over the past three seasons. "That winning mentality is going to be important in the Big Ten and we were happy so many players contributed to this win and this start to the season. But honestly, we weren't thrilled about the way we played tonight. There are still things we need to clean up defensively, and we still have some time to figure that out."
Southern kept it close over the first 15 minutes of the game, evidenced by an eventual season-high .449 mark from the floor. The Scarlet Knights used a 9-0 run powered by Mack – who netted 10 in the second quarter – and turned up the defense to keep the Jags scoreless for more than three minutes. The Scarlet Knights never trailed by less than double-digits for the remainder.
Rutgers wraps up non-conference play and a four-game home stand leading up to Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 15 against Marshall at 2 p.m. at the RAC.
