MACON, Ga. (Feb. 9, 2019) – Rutgers softball won its 1,000
th game in program history and avenged a pair of opening day losses by sweeping Jacksonville State, 13-5, and Mercer, 8-4, on Saturday at the Mercer Invitational.
"I am very proud of our team and how they bounced back today," said head coach
Kristen Butler, who won her first game at the helm of the Scarlet Knights. "We still have a lot to work on, but we are learning and getting better every day."
The Rutgers softball program won its first game on April 2, 1975, and on Feb. 9, 2019 – reached No. 1,000.
"I want to say congratulations to all Rutgers Alumnae, current players, and former coaches who were part of 1,000 wins for Rutgers softball," Butler added. "That's a big milestone for this program and we're blessed to be a part of it."

STANDOUT STATS
- Freshman catcher Katie Wingert went 4-for-4 with her second home run in as many games.
- Freshman second baseman Aleah Marra recorded her first collegiate hit with an RBI double in the second, and added an RBI single to invoke the eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth.
- Senior pitcher Whitney Jones picked up her first win of the season by throwing the first four innings. Freshman Corah Price hurled the final two scoreless frames without allowing a hit, just a walk in 22 pitches.
- Junior right fielder Anyssa Iliopoulos smashed her second home run of the season, accounting for two of her three RBIs.
- Senior designated player Allie Yoffee and junior first baseman Nicole Bowman added home runs in the 13-run onslaught.
THE RUNDOWN
- After Iliopoulos staked Rutgers with a 1-0 lead with a sac fly in the top of the first, Mercer stole the lead in the home half of the first with a homer and an RBI double.
- Then, the floodgates opened. Rutgers' bats awoke with a fury for seven hits, including home runs by Wingert, Iliopoulos and Yoffee for a 9-2 lead.
- The Gamecocks crept back in the fourth with three runs on a single and another homer.
- Rutgers bought insurance in the latter innings with two runs scored on a JSU error in the fifth, a Bowman solo bomb in the sixth, and Marra's de facto walk-off RBI single for the 13-5 victory in six.
ILIOPOULOS SETS GRAND TONE IN 8-4 WIN OVER MERCER
STANDOUT STATS
- Iliopoulos was 1-for-4, but the one was a grand slam to start the game's scoring.
- Bowman batted 2-for-4 with a three-run home run.
- Hughes finished 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and a stolen base, while playing errorless shortstop.
- Price won her first career game, throwing four innings and allowing one earned run on four hits and no walks. She struck out two.
- Jones recorded the third save of her career by pitching the final three effective innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits and zero walks with two strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
- Swinging the hottest bat on the team, Iliopoulos launched her second career grand slam in the top of the third inning. The salami – Iliopoulos' third homer in four games – chased home Wingert, Hughes and Anico for the 4-0 lead.
- Price picked up where she left off on Saturday morning, cruising through the first two innings with just one base runner allowed. Mercer got on the board in the bottom of the third on an unearned run.
- Sloppy defense from the Bears led to Rutgers' fifth run in the top of the fourth, driven home on Hughes' RBI groundout.
- Mercer finally got to Price with a leadoff triple in the home half of the fourth, which eventually led to a run on a sac fly to get the Bears within three runs at 5-2.
- Bowman extended the lead to 8-2 in the top of the seventh with her second home run in as many days.
- Mercer pushed two across with their last licks before Jones shut the door by fielding a groundout.
KNIGHT NOTES
- Iliopoulos has been the only Rutgers player to hit in all four games this season.
- Anico and Iliopoulos have reached base safely in each game to start the season.
- Anico is now four hits away from No. 100 for her career.
