Tennis Battles Buffalo for 5-2 Victory

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J.  – Rutgers tennis defeated Buffalo by a score of 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights claimed five singles victories to earn the win.

"The team's win was very impressive because we did not get the doubles point and sometimes that can be really hard to come back from," said freshman Tess Fisher. "We turned everything around and came out with a lot of energy in singles. We came out like we weren't behind and that helped a lot."

RU improved to 5-2 on the season, while UB fell to 6-3 overall.

DOUBLES PLAY
After Buffalo claimed a straight set win at the No. 1 spot, the duo of sophomore Maya Jacobs and junior Jaci Cochrane recorded a 6-3 victory against Pia Schwarz and Arianna Paules Aldrey to balance the competition.

At the No. 3 spot, however, freshmen Sydney Kaplan and Kristiana Zahare were edged by Buffalo's Emel Abibula and Hsin-Yuan Shih.

SINGLES ACTION
Rutgers would then rally in the singles competition, starting with a win for Cochrane at the No. 5 spot. She topped UB's Shih 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match 1-1.

Although Buffalo moved back in front with a win at the No. 2 spot, Kaplan rallied a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot to balance the match score, 2-2.

Jacobs then tacked on another victory for RU at the No. 1 spot, defeating her opponent by scores of 7-5, 6-2. Jacobs moved to 6-1 overall at the No. 1 singles position this season.

At the No. 3 spot, Fisher clinched the match for RU with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Schwarz. Classmate Zahare then capped the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot.
