FAIRFAX, Calif. – Harriet Allsebrook is atop the leaderboard with a seven-under par 137 (67-70) after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Invitational at Meadow Club, played Monday. Boosted by the sophomore's performance, the Scarlet Knights enter Tuesday's final round third in the 12-team field with a three-over par 579 total, which includes a program-record 284 in the opening round.
"I had a lot of fun out on the course today," said Allsebrook. "It was great to see my game come together and for the putts to drop. As a team, we felt solid heading into this tournament, with some really good practices the last couple of days. I'm happy that we all supported each other out there today, with an amazing team score to prove it."
Allsebrook's initial round 67 ties for the second-best round in program history. She is minus three in par four scoring, and minus two on both par threes and fives, through 36 holes. With nine birdies to her credit, Allsebrook leads the 72-player field by three strokes with 18 holes to play.
"Harriet's game really came together today in all facets," said head coach
Kari Williams. "She is striking the ball well and was able to roll in a handful of birdie putts on these challenging greens."
Rutgers, No. 83 in the Golfstat ratings, compiled 118 pars and 28 birdies on the par 72, 6,157-yard course. RU's first round performance bested the program's prior record (287) by three strokes. With four players in the top half of the field, the Scarlet Knights are ahead of No. 26 Pepperdine, No. 32 San Jose State and No. 47 California, as well as Big Ten foe Minnesota.
"It was really fun to watch the team play this morning," said Williams. "They came out prepared and ready to score, and that helped us jump out in front of the field. We got a little tentative in the afternoon as the wind picked up and the greens got quicker. I'm proud of how the team rallied to finish coming down the stretch to maintain our position. Tomorrow's round will be a great test for us and we are all looking forward to it.
