Pogarch Joins Portland Thorns FC of the NWSL

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior defender Madison Pogarch has joined the Portland Thorns FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), being named to their 2019 preseason roster.
The team opens training camp for its seventh season in the league. Preseason competition kicks off with the 2019 Thorns Spring Invitational presented by Tillamook March 24-30 at Merlo Field features the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team, Reign FC and Chicago Red Stars.
In her first season as a Scarlet Knight, Pogarch started all 20 contests. The defender, who was a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, aided the back line in holding opponents to three or less shots on goal in 10 out of 18 matches.
The Hartland, Michigan, native earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping RU post two overtime shutouts against then-No. 14 Northwestern and Illinois. Both of those games ended in victory, fueling the Scarlet Knights' 6-0-5 overall overtime record last season.
Pogarch was named Second Team All-Region and Third Team All-Big Ten, picking up an all-conference honor for the fourth straight season. The back transferred to RU as a two-time All-MAC recipient and All-Freshman selection at Central Michigan.
Pogarch joins fellow Rutgers 2018 senior class member Kenie Wright to enter the NWSL rankings for this season. Six Scarlet Knights are now active in the league for the 2019 season, including Carli Lloyd (Sky Blue FC), Madison Tiernan (Sky Blue FC), Erica Skroski (Sky Blue FC), Wright (Sky Blue FC), and Kristen Edmonds (Orlando Pride).
The NWSL regular season is set to begin the weekend of April 13-14. The league will then take a break for the group stage of 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup from June 3-14 and return June 15-16. The 2019 NWSL Championship is set for October 26.
