Softball Wins Sixth Straight With Victories Over Tennessee Tech & Evansville

Scarlet Knights are on longest winning streak since 2015

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 9, 2019) – Senior shortstop Jess Hughes accounted for seven RBIs during a Rutgers softball sweep of Tennessee Tech and Evansville on Saturday at the Buccaneer Classic at East Tennessee State's Betty Basler Field.

The Scarlet Knights (12-9) have won six straight games for the first time since a seven-game winning streak in April 2015. Rutgers pounded out 19 hits on Saturday, including a home run from freshman catcher Katie Wingert in each game, while the defense didn't commit a single error.

WINGERT & HUGHES HOMER TO BACK QUALITY JONES START

 31196
QUICK PITCH
Hughes rocketed her fourth home run of the year, part of a five-RBI game for the senior shortstop. That was plenty of support for her classmate and starting pitcher Whitney Jones, who allowed a single run and improved to 7-5 in the circle this year.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Hughes was 3-for-4 with two runs, five RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Jones allowed five hits in six innings of work with four walks and three strikeouts.
  • Wingert (1-for-3 with a walk) hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and scored two total runs.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Hughes started the day with an opposite field double down the left field line before being sacrificed to third. She scored on a delayed steal, which went down as a failed pickoff as the Golden Eagles (8-6) dropped a throw during the rundown, allowing Hughes to score for the first run of the game.
  • Following Wingert's round-tripper to make it 3-0, Hughes capped the four-run fourth inning with a two-run single up the middle as Rutgers took a 5-0 advantage.
  • It was five RBIs in a row for Hughes, whose three-run bomb in the top of the sixth made it 8-0. The long shot to right field scored Nicolette Anico and Madyson Cole.
  • Tennessee Tech got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to erase the eight-run rule and continue into the seventh inning, but junior left fielder Hailey Hoklotubbe pushed the lead back to eight with a sacrifice fly to score Wingert, who walked to lead off the frame.

ILIOPOULOS & WINGERT'S BACK-TO-BACK BOMBS SCORE A RUN-RULE WALK OFF

 31195
QUICK PITCH
Rutgers used four hits to break out for five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a comfortable 6-1 lead over the Purple Aces (7-9) in support of freshman pitcher Corah Price. Needing two runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with a run-rule victory, junior Anyssa Iliopoulos and Wingert delivered with back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Seven different Scarlet Knights recorded a hit, led by multi-hit performances from Iliopoulos, Wingert, freshman second baseman Aleah Marra and Hoklotubbe, who had a pair of RBI singles.
  • Hughes drove in another two runs on a double during a 1-for-3 game with a run scored and a walk.
  • Sophomore Erin Collins batted 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, accounting for Rutgers' first two runs of the game.
  • Price completed her start with six innings of one-run ball with five hits, four walks and six strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Collins put a grounder in play to score the first run of the game before Evansville tied it with a solo home run in the top of the second.
  • The Scarlet Knights jumped ahead in the third as Iliopoulos struck out to lead off, but reached on a passed ball. Wingert was hit by a pitch, then Collins' RBI single and Marra's RBI bunt single gave RU a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Hoklotubbe added a run-scoring single and Hughes knocked a two-run double before ending the inning by getting tagged on an overslide going for a triple.
  • Hoklotubbe got her third RBI of the doubleheader day with a slapped single down the left field line for a 7-1 cushion. Price sat down the Purple Aces in order in the top of the sixth, setting up the back-to-back homers to end the game in home half.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers has scored first in 11 of its 12 victories this season.
  • Rutgers has scored in the first inning in five straight games and in eight of its last nine. RU has scored in the first inning in 11 of it 21 games, and is 8-3 in those contests.
  • Hughes has reached base safely in 12 straight games, while Collins and Iliopoulos carry six-game hitting streaks.
  • Rutgers hit two home runs in each game and improves to 6-1 when hitting two or more home runs in a game.
  • The Scarlet Knights last hit back-to-back home runs when Hughes and Rebecca Hall did it on March 17, 2018 at Mercer.
