Scarlet Knights finish seventh during weekend action in State College
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Sophomore Christopher Gotterup finished tied for fourth to highlight action for Rutgers men's golf at the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday in State College, Pennsylvania. Despite heavy rain that plagued the backend of the final round, the Scarlet Knights finished seventh with a 879 (293-287-299), one stroke behind Big Ten Conference foe Minnesota.
Gotterup, who was atop the leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round, produced a two-under-par 211 (71-67-73) during the three-round event to secure his second top-5 individual finish of his career. Gotterup finished his three rounds with 10 birdies, an eagle and was second at three-under-par in par four scoring.
"Chris continues to show he can contend in any tournament he plays in, and it was good to see him secure an impressive finish despite the playing conditions," said head coach Rob Shutte. "We got caught in quite a bit of rain towards the end and it was a tough finish as we were pressing down the stretch, but we played solid at points this weekend which has us confident we can close out the regular season on a strong note.
Host Penn State captured its fifth consecutive Rutherford Intercollegiate team title with an 855 (287-278-290), followed by Eastern Michigan (283-283-291: 857) and West Virginia (290-289-283: 862). Connecticut's Drake Hull used a three-under-par 68 in the final round to claim the individual crown (70-70-68: 208).
Sophomore Oliver Whatley moved up two spots for a top-20 result, as he finished tied for 18th with a five-over-par 218 (73-72-73). Whatley led the team with 38 pars over his three rounds of play and was tied for sixth in par four scoring with an even 4.0 average.
Junior Tony Jiang (73-71-79: 223), freshman Shayler Dance (79-77-74: 230) and sophomore Bobby Weise (76-77-80: 233) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 37th, 62nd and tied for 67th, respectively. Senior Matthew Mourin tied for 73rd (78-78-81: 237) competing as an individual.
Rutgers returns to the links from April 20-21 at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State, in Columbus.
