Tennis Drops Match to Michigan State in Home Finale

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  – Rutgers tennis fell to Michigan State by a margin of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the RU Tennis Complex. The Spartans used four singles matches and the team doubles point to edge the Scarlet Knights.

"I thought today was a good match, but, unfortunately, good isn't going to cut it. We are right there and I'm really proud of some of the girls that won in three sets," said Head Coach Hilary Ritchie. "Doubles would have been really big today. Our momentum if we could have got that point would have put a different spin on the match."

DOUBLES PLAY
Michigan State captured the team doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.

At the No. 2 position, junior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Kristiana Zahare had a 5-3 advantage over Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens when doubles action concluded.

SINGLES PLAY
The Scarlet Knights saw four singles matches head into three sets with RU winning two of those matches.

Junior Kat Muzik picked up a victory at the No. 3 spot, defeating the Spartans' Davina Nguyen by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

Freshman Tess Fisher won her third conference match of the season, topping MSU's Lauren Lemonds by scores of 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.

"We are going to be focused on the two opportunities we have next weekend. We're going to get after it in practice this week and see what we can do," said Ritchie.
