FLOURTOWN, Pa. – Rutgers men's golf is tied for fourth after the first round of the Big Ten Championships, played Friday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. Despite an hour-long rain delay and wet conditions throughout play, the Scarlet Knights carded a 291 in the opening round on the par-70 Wissahickon Course.
Continuing his strong play this spring, sophomore
Christopher Gotterup produced a one-under-par 69 and is tied for third to lead RU after the first 18 holes of play. One of just four players in the entire field to come in at under par, Gotterup had two birdies on the back nine and added 15 pars for the impressive scorecard.
Junior
Tony Jiang is also within the top 10 after the first round, tied for eighth with a one-over-par 71. Jiang also had two birdies and contributed 13 pars during his round.
Rookie
Shayler Dance (75), sophomore
Bobby Weise (76) and sophomore
Oliver Whatley (79) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 36
th, 47
th and 64
th, respectively.
Purdue sits in first with a two-over-par 282, while Minnesota and Illinois are tied for second at 287. Minnesota's Angus Flanagan produced a five-under-par 65 to top the leaderboard after the first round.
Rutgers is paired with Michigan State and Iowa for Saturday's second round and will tee off hole one beginning at 9 a.m.
