Softball Edged at Indiana

Hoosiers need a walk-off hit in the seventh to top Iliopoulos’ game-tying homer in the sixth

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (April 27, 2019) – Rutgers softball (24-22, 8-11) fell in walk-off fashion, 3-2, at Indiana (33-18, 8-11) in Game 2 of a three-game Big Ten series on Saturday at Andy Mohr Field.

QUICK PITCH
  • Freshman starting pitcher Corah Price kept the Hoosiers at bay late into the game, when junior Anyssa Iliopoulos tied the game with a two-run home run in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Price got a big strikeout with a runner on third and one out before Indiana walked off with the win on an RBI single.
STANDOUT STATS
  • Junior third baseman Anyssa Iliopoulos paced the offense with a 1-for-2 day and a game-tying, two-run home run – her eighth of the season.
  • Freshman designated player Penelope Russ and senior center fielder Nicolette Anico added hits for the Scarlet Knights.
  • Price fell just one out shy of forcing extra innings, scattering eight hits and three walks over 6.2 frames with three strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Hoosiers struck first with a leadoff solo home run in the second, but freshman catcher Katie Wingert kept it there with a pair of caught stealing throws to end each the first and second innings.
  • Price limited the Hoosiers through the opening five innings, holding them to five hits, including an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
  • Following senior shortstop Jess Hughes' leadoff walk in the top of the sixth, Iliopoulos lined the first pitch she saw over the left-center field fence for a one-out, two-run homer to tie it at 2-2.
  • Price immediately responded with a scoreless bottom of the sixth, retiring the middle of the Hoosiers' order despite a two-out base hit.
  • Indiana led off the final scheduled inning with a double, and quickly sacrificed a bunt to set up a runner at third with just one out. After a slew of defensive changes, Price pumped an 0-2 pitch passed Tete Hart for the second out, then issued an intentional free pass to Taylor Lambert. Gabbi Jenkins then hit the first pitch she saw in the next at-bat into centerfield for the walk-off winner.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Iliopoulos' two-run home run in the sixth tied the game and was Rutgers 14th game-tying or go-ahead homer of the season. For Iliopoulos, it was her third.
  • Indiana ties the all-time series 9-9, as Rutgers leads 8-6 as Big Ten opponents.
  • Wingert has only had two official at-bats through two games at Indiana with four walks.
