Sophomore produced top 5 finish Sunday at Big Ten Conference Championships
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore Christopher Gotterup was named a 2019 All-Big Ten Second Team selection, announced Tuesday by the league office. This is Gotterup's first career all-conference award and the first for the program since it joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.
'We couldn't be more thrilled for Chris," said head coach Rob Shutte. "He's really been on fire during the last several tournaments. To have the other coaches in the conference recognize that means a lot to both Chris and this program. It shows that we're able to attract and develop top-level talent here at Rutgers."
Gotterup closed out his spring campaign with three consecutive Top 5 individual finishes, including a tied-for-fourth result at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Championships from April 26-28 in Philadelphia. Gotterup appeared as high as No. 1 on the leaderboard during the tournament and was named to the All-Big Ten Championships Team, a first for the Scarlet Knights. The CBA product helped the program to its best result at the conference championships with its sixth-place finish.
Gotterup also produced Top 5 results at the Rutherford Intercollegiate (tied-for-fourth) from April 13-14 in University Park, Pennsylvania and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (fourth) from April 19-20 in Columbus, Ohio. During the stretch, Gotterup has enjoyed a 70.62 18-hole scoring average with five rounds of even or below-par play. Gotterup has also been the top finisher for Rutgers in all six tournaments during the spring and eight overall in 2018-19.
"It's a pretty cool honor to be recognized by the Big Ten," Gotterup said. "Hopefully this is the first of many accolades for not just me, but the rest of my teammates. I've been on a nice hot streak to close out the spring, so it's an exciting time and hopefully I'm able to continue at Regionals."
The 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selections announcement will take place on Wednesday, May 1 at 9 p.m. ET, on GOLF Channel's Golf Central and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals will be selected to compete at one of six regional championship sites. If Gotterup is selected, he will be the first Scarlet Knight to compete at an NCAA Regional event since the team competed at the NCAA East Regional in 2005.
