LYNCHBURG, Va. (May 17, 2019) – The Rutgers softball 2019 season concluded on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Marshall during the playback round of the National Invitational Softball Championship at Liberty's Kamphuis Field.
Â
The Scarlet Knights (29-26) surrendered three runs in the top of the first to the Thundering Herd (40-21) and couldn't get the offense started against Marshall starting pitcher Abigail Tolbert, who needed 126 pitchers in a four-hit shutout.
Â
Freshman catcher
Katie Wingert, junior first baseman
Nicole Bowman, freshman second baseman
Aleah Marra and sophomore third baseman
Myah Moy all picked up hits for the Scarlet Knights, but Rutgers went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Â
Making her final appearance in the circle for the Scarlet Knights, senior pitcher
Whitney Jones hurled the final three innings of scoreless softball with two hits and a walk allowed.
Â
The Scarlet Knights won 29 games this season, including 11 in the Big Ten. Both of those marks were the highest since 2015. Under the leadership of first-year head coach
Kristen Butler, Rutgers earned its highest seed at the Big Ten Tournament since joining the conference, and qualified for the program's first non-conference postseason berth since 1996 by competing in the NISC.
