PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior
Tony Jiang and sophomore
Christopher Gotterup were both named 2019 PING Division I Northeast All-Region, announced over the weekend by the
Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). It marks the second consecutive season Gotterup has earned the distinction, while Jiang earns the designation for the first time in his career.
This also represents the first time the program has had multiple all-region selections under head coach
Rob Shutte. Gotterup was named all-region last year as a rookie, while Jonathan Chang earned a spot on the list in 2014 during Shutte's tenure.
A 2019 Second Team All-Big Ten selection, Gotterup closed out his spring campaign with three consecutive Top 5 individual finishes, including a tied-for-fourth result at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Championships from April 26-28 in Philadelphia. Gotterup appeared as high as No. 1 on the leaderboard during the tournament and was named to the All-Big Ten Championships Team, a first for the Scarlet Knights. The CBA product helped the program to its best result at the conference championships with its sixth-place finish.
Gotterup also produced Top 5 results at the Rutherford Intercollegiate (tied-for-fourth) from April 13-14 in University Park, Pennsylvania and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (fourth) from April 19-20 in Columbus, Ohio. During the stretch, Gotterup enjoyed a 70.62 18-hole scoring average with five rounds of even or below-par play. Gotterup was also the top finisher for Rutgers in all six tournaments during the spring and eight overall in 2018-19.
The most experienced player on the roster, Jiang has appeared in 27 tournaments and 79 rounds for the Scarlet Knights during his three collegiate seasons. In 2018-19, Jiang started all 11 tournaments, as he finished his junior campaign with a 73.15 scoring average. Jiang carded four Top 10 finishes in 2018-19 to co-lead RU along with Gotterup, which included three Top 10 results in the fall. This spring, Jiang had four rounds of even or under-par golf and produced two victories at the Big Ten Match Play Championships back in February.
