LDSP: Global Scarlet Knights Study Abroad Program in London and Spain
Jun 04
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Office of Leadership Development and Strategic Partnerships (LDSP) in partnership with the Rutgers Graduate School of Education completed a study abroad program. The 3-credit, 2-week course, Educational Influence of Sport in a Global Society, included visits to the U.K. and Spain to learn about global influence of sport and the Olympic movement.
"LDSP is thrilled to kick off this credit based partnership for student-athletes to participate in study abroad opportunities in partnership with RU Global and the Graduate School of Education," said Dr. Kristina Navarro, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Leadership Development and Strategic Partnerships. "We look forward to working with Sport Travel Academy again in the future to allow more student-athletes to participate in this cultural and educational opportunity."
The trip included lectures and presentations on sports business and history in addition to visits to sport marketing agencies and historic stadiums. Three Scarlet Knights, including Alanna Gollotto and Nicole Santore of field hockey and Kat Muzik of women's tennis, and additional Rutgers students took part in this trip.
"Studying Global Sports abroad was a great experience that I will never forget," said Muzik. "It has given me an appreciation for all sports and the history behind them. I especially loved being able to see Wimbledon. Getting to see where my coach played when she was on tour was on the coolest things I have ever done."
"I went into this trip excited to learn about the different cultures and sports of Spain and England and that is exactly what happened," said Gollotto. "It was amazing to learn how much the culture is actually affected by sports, such as cricket and soccer, similar to how in the U.S. baseball, football, and basketball are heavily followed. Sports have a huge impact on the world and being able to see that from different countries and compare it to America was an amazing experience!"

TRIP OVERVIEW
The first stop was in London for guided tours of Wimbledon, the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, Lord's Cricket Arena, and Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea FC. At each stop, the Scarlet Knights focused on business elements such as operations in branding, merchandise, marketing, finance and staffing.
Between class presentations, the group had a chance to visit Sports Business International (SBI) and Octagon Sports Marketing Agency to learn about each organizations role in the sports industry from data analysis to athlete representation.
The group then made its way to Barcelona for tours of Camp Nou Stadium, home of FC Barcelona before jumping into more presentations led by an Autonomous University of Barcelona professor. Lecture topics throughout both stops of the trip included marketing, sales and business of football overseas, comparison of sport institutions in the USA and Europe, sports mega-events, the globalization of soccer, and more.
Additionally, the group had a chance to explore the cities to learn about the history and culture at each location.
