Massachusetts native carded seven-under-par scorecard at USGA qualifier
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's golf incoming freshman Xavier Marcoux secured a spot in the 119th U.S. Amateur Championship after he won the USGA Andover qualifier on Wednesday at the Andover Country Club in Massachusetts. The future Scarlet Knight won the event by two strokes, as he finished with a seven-under-par 137 (69-68) during the 36-hole event.
The top individual finishers at each of the 96 qualifying sectional events – which run throughout the month of July – all secure spots at the U.S. Amateur, played from August 14-16 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Current RU student-athletes Bobby Weise and Oliver Whatley earned alternate positions at the U.S. Amateur after their performances in their respective qualifiers, while incoming rookie Brendan Hansen carded an alternate qualifying scorecard in his sectional event.
Marcoux opened the qualifier with a three-under-par 69 on his first 18 holes, which included five birdies and a bogey-free back nine. The Concord, Massachusetts, native then added a bogey-free four-under-par 68 in the final round, as he finished with four birdies to cap his impressive outing.
Marcoux, who signed his NLI last November, is regarded as a top-70 incoming recruit according to GolfWeek. The additions of Marcoux and Hansen bolster a roster that features two 2019 PING Division I All-Region players – rising senior Tony Jiang and rising junior Christopher Gotterup. Behind top-10 results from Gotterup and rising sophomore Shayler Dance, Rutgers produced the best result at the Big Ten Championships in program history with its sixth-place finish in 2019 under head coach Rob Shutte.
