Santagado collects honor for fourth time in as many years
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers gymnastics had 11 representatives on the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-America list released this week. To be recognized for this honor, student-athletes must carry a grade-point average of 3.50 or better during the 2018-19 academic year.
The 11 honorees are the most Scholastic All-Americans for the Scarlet Knights since 2012.
"We are so proud of the academic accomplishments of our team," head coach Umme Salim-Beasley said. "We always stress the importance of academics first. It's nice to see that we are thriving not only in the gym, but in the classroom as well."
All four seniors from the 2019 roster collected Scholastic All-America status, with Eriel Santagado claiming her fourth recognition in as many years. She was the athletic department's recipient of the Female Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award at the RAwards in May after posting a 3.969 cumulative GPA. In addition, the program garnered acknowledgement for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score, had 14 selections to the Academic All-Big Ten list and saw five pickup Big Ten Distinguished Scholar status.
Rutgers gymnastics was also recently recognized as the most improved team with a first year head coach in data collected by College Gym News after climbing nine spots in the national rankings.
