Rising junior continues to shine during 2019 summer circuit
CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Christopher Gotterup continued his impressive summer with another individual title, as the rising junior claimed the 117th Met Amateur Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Hudson National Golf Club. Consisting of a single elimination match play format, Gotterup downed Ryan Davis from Penn State, 7&5, during the final to earn the prestigious trophy.
Playing 36 holes during Sunday's final round, Gotterup secured his individual title with a birdie on the 13th hole for the first Metropolitan Amateur Championship of his young career. Penciled in as the No. 3 seed in the historic tournament, Gotterup defeated No. 14 seed Jimin Jung and No. 11 seed Jack Wall (South Carolina) in the first two rounds of the tournament before upending No. 2 seed Adam Xiao (Harvard) in Saturday's semifinals to advance to the championship matchup with Davis.
Gotterup's match play championship was his second individual title of the summer, as the Little Silver, New Jersey, native also won the 99th New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Open Championship on July 24 at Trump National. Sunday's win also marked the fourth for a member of Rutgers men's golf this summer, as incoming freshman Xavier Marcoux collected wins at the USGA Andover qualifier on July 11 and the 90th New England Golf Association Amateur on July 25.
A 2019 All-Big Ten Second Team selection, Gotterup closed out the regular season with three consecutive Top 5 individual finishes, including a tied-for-fourth result at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Championships. Gotterup appeared as high as No. 1 on the leaderboard during the tournament and was named to the All-Big Ten Championships Team, a first for the Scarlet Knights. Gotterup was also a 2019 PING Division I Northeast All-Region selection, the second time in as many seasons he has earned the distinction.
