Men's Golf finishes eighth in Winston-Salem
Final Results
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Tony Jiang carded a Top-10 finish and junior Christopher Gotterup also closed his tournament under par as Rutgers men's golf wrapped up play at the Old Town Club Collegiate on Tuesday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. For Jiang, it marks the second consecutive Top-15 individual result in as many outings, as he also tied for 13th at the Badger Invitational earlier this month.
The Scarlet Knights (840: 278-275-287) finished eighth in the 13-team field, contested at the Old Town Club. Washington (810: 272-266-272) captured the team title, followed by host Wake Forest (819: 268-274-277) and Louisville (828: 277-268-283). Washington's Noah Woolsey secured the individual title with a 15-under-par 195 (66-66-63).
RU's six competitors combined for eight rounds of even or under-par golf, while the Scarlet Knights finished fourth in the field with 46 combined birdies.
"We had a couple of our guys finish towards the top, so that was a great takeaway from this tournament," said head coach Rob Shutte. "It was also a learning experience for the younger guys in our lineup. We were only a few strokes behind some of the top teams in the country, so if we can just clean up some of our mistakes, we know we have the capability to compete at the highest level."
Despite dealing with a foot injury throughout the tournament, Jiang (205: 71-65-69) finished at five under during his three rounds, which included a one-under-par 69 on Tuesday. In total, Jiang collected nine birdies during his three rounds of action and tied for second in the 75-player field with 39 pars. Jiang added two birdies and 15 pars on Tuesday.
"Ton was battling with an injury and had a hard time walking the course," Shutte said. "We're proud of the way he gutted it out and how he performed under those conditions. We'll shut him down for a few weeks as we continue to prepare for the Irish Classic."
Gotterup (206: 66-70-70) also enjoyed an impressive tournament with his four-under-par scorecard. Gotterup shot an even 70 on Tuesday, which included four birdies and 10 pars during his final 18 holes. Gotterup led RU with 11 birdies over the three rounds and also registered an eagle on Monday.
Freshman Xavier Marcoux (215: 68-72-75), sophomore Shayler Dance (216: 73-68-75) and freshman Brendan Hansen (222: 74-75-73) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 52nd, 54th and 71st, respectively. Competing as an individual, junior Oliver Whatley (217: 74-68-75) tied for 59th.
Rutgers returns to action from Oct. 7-8 when it competes at the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Indiana.
