CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – No. 5-seed
Sammy Alvarez claimed an individual title at 133 pounds to highlight action for Rutgers wrestling at the 2020 Southern Scuffle on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The true freshman picked off two top-10 opponents during the tournament and used a takedown in the final 20 seconds against No. 2-seed Cam Sykora (NDSU) to earn a 5-4 decision in his championship bout.
Along with Alvarez, four other Scarlet Knights -
Brett Donner (seventh, 165),
Jordan Pagano (seventh, 197),
Nicolas Aguilar (eighth, 125) and
Michael Van Brill (eighth, 157) - placed as RU finished seventh in the team race with 84 points. Sixteen student-athletes combined for 17 wins by bonus points during the two-day tournament, including seven falls.
"Overall, we lost a bunch of big matches," said head coach
Scott Goodale. "We need to be better in a lot of different spots. We understand this is a different team than in years past, but there are expectations now at Rutgers and we need to do our part to meet them. We will continue to improve and prepare for the rest of our Big Ten and out-of-conference dual schedule."
Trailing Sykora 3-1 midway through the second period of his final, Alvarez and Sykora scrambled before Alvarez was awarded two with 41 seconds left in the second. With a neutral start in the third, Alvarez and Sykora were once again caught together, but Alvarez spun around for another takedown to make it 5-3 with 45 seconds remaining. Sykora would escape and threaten, but Alvarez held on for the victory.
"Sammy was poised, controlled and confident these past two days and did not let the moment get too big," Goodale said. "All of this is a stepping stone for March, but man, he is fun to watch and coach."
Alvarez scored one of the biggest victories of the tournament with his 6-3 decision over No. 1 seed and No. 4 ranked Micky Phillippi (Pittsburgh) in Thursday morning's semifinal match. After a scoreless first and a Phillippi escape to begin period two, Alvarez countered with a double leg takedown for a 2-1 lead. Both traded escapes before Alvarez was hit for a stall to make it 3-3 with 30 seconds to go. However, Alvarez would add another takedown in the closing seconds and the riding time point for the biggest win of his young collegiate career.
Alvarez' victory over Phillippi, a 2019 NCAA qualifier ranked as high as No. 2 in the country during his time at Pitt, made it six wins for Alvarez over ranked foes. Alvarez has yet to lose to a ranked foe during his rookie campaign and owns a 15-4 record in 2019-20.
