Jan 24 | Women's Gymnastics
ANN ARBOR, MICH. – Rutgers gymnastics competed in its first dual Big Ten meet of the season on the road Saturday at No. 9 Michigan. The Scarlet Knights produced a number of career-highs and season-bests to guide the team to its top event scores of the year on bars and vault.
"We had a strong start to our evening on bars and vault, putting up our highest event scores of the season," said Head Coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "We made a few mistakes on floor and ended up tightening up on beam. It wasn't the performance that we had hoped for. This team is much stronger than they showed today. It was a humbling moment and learning lesson. We will pick ourselves up and refocus for our Sunday meet at Penn."
UM, the Scarlet Knights' second top 10 opponent in as many meets, led the night with a 197.300, while RU posted a 192.950.
Rutgers came out strong on bars, as senior Shannon Farrell and sophomore Abigail Karolewski led the lineup with identical marks of 9.825. The result marked a career-high for Karolewski in the event. Freshman Hannah Joyner followed with a 9.750, while junior Emily Drauss added a 9.725 to boast a team score of 48.775, its highest of the year on the event.
In its second rotation on vault, the Scarlet Knights held its momentum as senior Kaitlyn Hall tallied a 9.800, matching her career-high to tie for third in the event. Four other Scarlet Knights posted above a 9.725 or above, as junior Belle Huang recorded 9.775 to help push RU to an overall mark of 48.775, a high for the event so far into this season.
Huang went on to post a team-high 9.850 on the floor for the Scarlet Knights. Joyner's 9.775 followed to contribute to a 47.475 as a team in the event.
For the third straight meet, Joyner proved the top competitor for RU on beam, notching a 9.775. RU posted a team mark of 47.925 in the event to close out the meet.
Joyner finished third in the all-around, reaching a 39.050 for her best mark of the year. Huang produced a 38.275 to round out the all-around competitors for RU.
Rutgers continues its weekend on the road with a trip to Penn on Sunday, Jan. 26. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at The Palestra.
