Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Falls at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Jan. 26, 2020) – Rutgers women's basketball (15-4, 5-3) fell at Michigan (13-6, 4-4) by a score of 71-57 on Sunday afternoon at the Crisler Center.

The Wolverines shot 50 percent from the floor and used a 34-28 edge in rebounding to claim victory at home. Each of the last five games of the series have now gone to the hosts, with Michigan scheduled to visit Rutgers later this season on Feb. 16.

STAT SHEET
  • Arella Guirantes poured in 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
  • Jordan Wallace nabbed nine rebounds and picked up three blocks in the post against Michigan's bigs.
  • Zipporah Broughton scored a season-high 13 points on a career-high tying three 3-pointers. She also played a season-high 27 minutes.
  • Khadaizha Sanders added 11 points with three assists.
TURNING POINT
Michigan answered an early 9-0 Rutgers run with a 10-0 rally of its own midway through the first quarter, the first of two 10-0 spurts in the first half. Those scoring bursts padded a 22-point lead right before halftime, which was too much for the Scarlet Knights to overcome.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Michigan opened the game 0-of-6 from the floor as Guirantes netted a circus shot in the paint and a more-traditional three-point swish for an early 6-2 lead before Michigan's 10-0 run. Rutgers went scoreless from the field for more than four minutes as the Wolverine rally stretched to 13-2. Zipporah Broughton answered a Michigan triple with a trey of her own, but the Wolverines closed the quarter with a pair of freebies for a 20-13 advantage.
  • The Wolverines attacked in the second with a 15-2 run to open a 35-15 lead midway through the second quarter. Guirantes nailed her second three-pointer of the game in the waning seconds, slightly hampering Michigan's 40-23 lead at the break.
  • Tekia Mack and Guirantes battled back in the third with five and four points, respectively. The Michigan defense prevented Rutgers from scoring unanswered points throughout the period, which ended 55-37 in the Wolverines' favor.
  • RU made nine consecutive points via the three-pointer – two by Sanders and another by Broughton – in an attempt to chip away. That effort was thwarted by Michigan, who remained no less than a 14-point lead down the stretch.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers now leads the all-time series 5-3 overall and 4-3 as Big Ten opponents.
  • Guirantes maintains her Big Ten scoring lead at 19.4 points per game.
  • Michigan outscored RU 40-26 in paint points, the first opponent to claim that over Rutgers this season.
  • Michigan had an 18-9 advantage in points off turnovers, the second opponent to claim that over Rutgers this year.
  • Michigan's .500 field goal percentage marked the first time a RU opponent shot over 45 percent this season.
  • Holding Michigan two points under its 73.6 season scoring average, Rutgers has held 18 of 19 opponents under their scoring median this year and in 48 of 51 dating back to the start of last season.
  • Rutgers has had at least two double-digit scorers in 18 of 19 games this season, and three for the 14th time. Rutgers falls to 13-1 when three players score in double-figures.
  • Rutgers rolled out the starting five of Khadaizha Sanders, Mael Gilles, Arella Guirantes, Tekia Mack and Jordan Wallace for the 18th time in 19 games.
