UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – Rutgers gymnastics recorded a strong outing on the road at Penn State, reaching 195.700 for a top 10 score in program history. The Scarlet Knights were just edged by the host Nittany Lions' mark of 196.325.
"The team had a fantastic performance today. We had to make a few changes to our lineup due to injuries, but our next gymnasts were ready to show what they were capable of," said head coach Umme Salim-Beasley. "Our team was confident and ready to step up. Tonight was a huge confidence builder and a nice jumpstart for our home meet next weekend. I am extremely proud of how they competed today."
Rutgers entered the meet on bars, beginning the night with a season-high 48.850 in the event. Sophomore Abigail Karolewski put together another tremendous performance with a 9.800, reaching 9.8 for the second time this year. Three other Scarlet Knights posted a 9.775 with their routines to start the night.
The momentum helped catapult RU to a 49.075 on a vault, a season-high in the event and third-highest team score in program history. Senior Kaitlyn Hall led the way with a new career-best at 9.850. Freshman Hannah Joyner produced an identical mark of 9.850 for her best mark of her rookie year.
Senior Shannon Farrell added a career-high of her own at 9.825 to round out the 9.8 performers.
Moving to its third rotation, Rutgers was led by senior Belle Huang with a 9.850 to match her season-best. Joyner followed with a 9.825 to guide the Scarlet Knights to a 48.575 overall result.
Rutgers closed out the night with power and poise on beam, topping its season-best mark for a second straight week with a 49.200. Joyner led the way with 9.925, her second time posting the mark and fourth time eclipsing a 9.9 in her young career.
Freshman Jordyn Duffield hit 9.850 for the first time in career, while sophomore Kiera Doherty-Herwitz registered a career-high 9.825. Huang contributed a 9.825 as well to make it four Scarlet Knights with a 9.825 or higher on the night.
