Oct 12 | Women's Basketball
BRADENTON, Fla. - Former Rutgers women's basketball Scarlet Knight Epiphanny Prince finished her 11th season in the WNBA in grand style, claiming the 2020 WNBA crown with the Seattle Storm following an undefeated run through the playoffs and a 3-0 sweep of the Las Vegas Aces in the Finals. Prince becomes the fifth Scarlet Knight to hoist the championship trophy.
Prince, one of 20 Scarlet Knights to be drafted by the WNBA and one of five former Rutgers student-athletes on a WNBA roster this season, was in her first season with the Storm. She was a first round selection with the fourth pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. She was selected to the 2010 All-Rookie Team, the 2011 and 2013 All Star Games and the 2015 All-WNBA Second Team.
During the 2020 Finals, the veteran Prince set the tone for the championship sweep by scoring 11 points in 16 minutes in Game 1, sinking 3-of-4 from the field with two 3-pointers and a 3-of-4 mark from the free throw line. She added seven assists and five steals in the Finals sweep of the Aces, averaging 15 minutes per game.
The Third Team All-American and two-time First Team All-Big East selection at Rutgers suited up for the Scarlet Knights from 2006-09 collecting 1,552 points and 260 steals. During her senior season "On The Banks", she averaged 19.5 points, 2.8 assists and in 2007 helped RU to the Big East Tournament title and the NCAA National Championship game.
In all, Scarlet Knights have won six WNBA championships. Prince joins Chelsea Newton (Sacramento; 2005), Cappie Pondexter (Phoenix; 2007 & 2009), Tammy Sutton-Brown (Indiana; 2012) and Essence Carson (Los Angeles; 2016) with a WNBA title.
