Rossi, Diederichs Wrap Up Action at European Ladies’ Amateur Championship

SMLEDNIK, SLOVENIA – Two members of Rutgers women's golf – junior Maeve Rossi and sophomore Anna-Maria Diederichs – participated in the 2020 European Ladies' Amateur Championship from Sept. 30 through Oct. 3 at the CUBO Golf Course in Smlednik, Slovenia. Rossi finished tied for 18th with an impressive five-under-par 279 (66-69-68-76), while Diederichs just missed the cut with her three-over-par 216 (74-72-70) to tie for 51st.
Rossi was in contention throughout the championship, as the Milan, Italy, native was tied for fourth heading into the final round. Battling consistent rain during the fourth round, Rossi produced a five-over-par 76 to finish tied for 18th in the 89-player field with participants from around Europe.
Rossi finished with 13 birdies during her four rounds of play, and opened the championships with a five-under-par 66 for her lowest round of the weekend. Rossi also carded a 69 (-2) in the second round and a 68 (-3) in the third, all lower than her lowest collegiate round of 70 produced at the Nittany Lion Invitational in 2018. With her performance, Rossi is now No. 902 in the latest Women's Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
"The championship was a good experience for me," Rossi said. "It's always a test when you get to play against some of the top amateurs. I felt very confident on the greens and was able to convert many putts for birdie in the first three rounds. The weather was a challenge in the final round but I am happy to have been in that position near the top of the leaderboard going into the last 18 holes."
Diederichs also played strong despite missing the cut, as her one-under-par 70 in the third round highlighted her three rounds. Diederichs, who entered the tournament after her second-place result at the Austrian International Amateur Open on Aug. 3, collected eight birdies over her 54 holes of play and is now ranked No. 858 in the WAGR.
The Scarlet Knights returns six student-athletes from last year's squad that produced the second-lowest team scoring average in program history at 300.85 before the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
