Melton, Fatukasi, Stevens and Korsak selected by teammates
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Following a team vote, wide receiver Bo Melton (offense), linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi (defense), defensive back Lawrence Stevens (special teams) and punter Adam Korsak (special teams) were selected as the 2020 Rutgers football captains. The quartet has helped the Scarlet Knights to three Big Ten victories so far, matching the program's high since joining the conference.
Melton leads RU with nine total touchdowns (six receiving, two rushing, one punt return), which ranks second in the Big Ten. Previously recognized nationally as member of the Biletnikoff Award watch list and the Hornung Award honor roll, he has posted career highs with 42 receptions for 557 yards, highlighted by back-to-back 100-yard games versus Illinois (150) and Michigan (109). Melton rushed for two touchdowns in the recent win at Maryland, both giving RU the lead, and collected a career-high 170 all-purpose yards at No. 3 Ohio State.
Fatukasi is the nation's leading tackler with an average of 12.4 per tackle. His 99 overall tackles are 22 more than any other player in the Big Ten. A semifinalist for the Butkus Award, the New York native has two games this season with 17 tackles and owns 11 tackles-for-loss in 2020, which are tied for the most by a Scarlet Knight in a Big Ten season, with three sacks. Fatukasi opened the season with 10 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble in the win at Michigan State to earn the Bednarik Award National Player of the Week.
Stevens, who originally joined the program as a walk-on, is tied for the team lead with six tackles on special teams in 2020. He owns 26 career tackles on special teams overall. Stevens earned his first collegiate start at safety versus Illinois and posted seven stops.
Korsak has helped Rutgers post a net punt of 42.14 to lead the Big Ten and rank 10th nationally this season, which would break the school record for the third-straight season. The Aussie has not had a touchback on 43 attempts with seven of at least 50 yards and a long of 66. A member of the Ray Guy Award watch list, Korsak has recorded 21 fair catches and pinned 17 inside the 20.
The Scarlet Knights are set for their ninth Big Ten game in nine weeks on Friday versus Nebraska. Kickoff from SHI Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
