Wrestling Enjoys Successful Showing at Tar Heel Wrestling Open

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Rutgers wrestling had several student-athletes compete at the inaugural Tar Heel Wrestling Open, hosted by the Tar Heel Wrestling Club, this past Friday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The freestyle event served as a preseason challenge for the highly-anticipate 2020-21 season, as all athletes wrestled as representatives from the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club (SKWC).
During the main card, Nicolas Aguilar (125) and Sammy Alvarez (133) secured impressive tech falls. Alvarez defeated 2019 Junior World Bronze medalist Gabe Tagg, 10-0, while Aguilar won by the same margin against three-time NJSIAA state placer Joe Heilmann. Also wrestling in the main event, Joseph Grello (174) earned a hard-fought 8-2 decision over 2020 NCAA qualifier Cade Lautt.
Robert Kanniard (165) and Billy Janzer (197) earned wins against their respective opponents in the under card. 2020 graduate and two-time NCAA qualifier Jordan Pagano also enjoyed a win with an 11-5 decision over 2019 WPIAL wrestling champion Max Shaw.
