Ashnault Qualifies for 2020 Olympic Trials

Ashnault, Graff claim individual Pan American Titles Monday in Ottawa, Canada
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Four-time All-American and 2019 NCAA champion Anthony Ashnault qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials after he secured a 70 kg freestyle gold medal on Monday at the Pan American Championships in Ottawa, Canada. Ashnault will now compete at the Olympic Trials from April 4-5 in University Park, Pennsylvania with a chance to represent Team USA at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Ashnault was one of six U.S. men's freestyle team members to win individual titles at the Pan American Championships, helping Team USA claim the team trophy. Rutgers wrestling volunteer assistant coach Tyler Graff also earned an individual title at 61 kg at the championships.
Ashnault joins Nick Suriano (57 kg) as Scarlet Knights heading to the trials next month. Suriano locked up his place at the tournament with his fourth-place finish at Senior Nationals on Dec. 22, 2019 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ashnault was named the most outstanding wrestler of the Pan American Championships, as he produced a 4-0 record with three falls en route to his individual title. Ashnault faced Hugo De Lima Viana De Souza of Brazil in his final match of the tournament, as he scored the first takedown before he pinned the Brazilian in 51 seconds to complete his undefeated effort.
Ashnault produced one of the most storied careers in program history, as he finished his time "On the Banks" as a four-time All-American, three-time Big Ten Conference champion and RU's all-time wins leader with 123 career victories. In his final season, the 2019 Hodge Trophy finalist went 32-0, secured the 2019 Big Ten title and closed his collegiate career with a national title at 149 pounds.
