Guirantes Tabbed WBCA All-Region 4

The Big Ten scoring leader is attempting to become Rutgers' first WBCA All-American since Cappie Pondexter in '06.

ATLANTA (March 25, 2020) — The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today Rutgers women's basketball junior guard Arella Guirantes as a Region 4 finalist for 2020 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America honors. The selection committee will select the 10-member WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America team from these 52 candidates on April 2.

Guirantes joins Tyler Scaife (2018) as Region 4 finalists from Rutgers women's basketball. She is seeking to earn the program's first WBCA All-America distinction since Cappie Pondexter in 2006.

This postseason, Guirantes has garnered honorable mention All-America status from the Associate Press and the United States Basketball Writers Association along with a nod to the All-Big Ten First Team. She led the Big Ten in scoring at 20.6 points per game and ranked No. 9 in the nation in scoring. Guirantes became the first Scarlet Knight in Rutgers' rich history to average 20 points, six rebounds and three assists per game for a season. In addition to leading the conference in scoring, she ranked in the Top 14 in eight different statistical categories across the second-ranked conference in the nation. She added averages of 6.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks.

The WBCA All-America selection committee uses an equation to determine an equitable number of finalists from each region. The number of NCAA Division I institutions in each region is divided by the number of NCAA Division I institutions overall to determine a percentage for each region. This percentage is then multiplied by 52 (the total number of desired finalists) to get the number of finalists for each region.
