Junior finished as the top ranked individual in the Big Ten this season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Christopher Gotterup was named to the 2020 NCAA Division I PING All-America Team, announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Gotterup earned third-team All-America recognition, as a total of 63 golfers were placed on the prestigious list.
Pegged a 2020 PING Division I Northeast All-Region selection last week for the third consecutive season, Gotterup finished his junior campaign as the top ranked Big Ten individual and No. 23 nationally with his 70.39 adjusted scoring average. The Little Silver, New Jersey native was also recognized in the final Arnold Palmer Cup rankings, a list recognizing the top individuals in the country, at No. 10 overall.
"It's hard to put into words what being named an All-American means," Gotterup said. "From winning at Notre Dame to breaking school records, this year was truly something special and a season I will never forget. Looking back, I've come so far from being ranked in the 600's to now an All-American. It's just a testament to how much work I have put in with the help of my parents, coaches, trainers and everyone else around me. It's just an unbelievable feeling."
"I'm incredibly happy and proud of Chris to earn this recognition for the season he had," said head coach Rob Shutte. "He is just getting started, though. He has improved every year since he arrived so if he can stay humble, hungry and keep drinking his juice, it's going to be fun to watch him here going into next season."
A 2019-20 Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Gotterup recorded three consecutive top 5 finishes to close out the 2019 fall campaign, which include an eight-shot win at the Fighting Irish Classic when he fired a 14-under par score of 199. Gotterup also tied for fifth place at the Quail Valley Collegiate with a 54-hole score of 205 (-11) during the impressive fall season.
Gotterup collected plenty of awards over the past few months, including the Co-Ben Hogan Award October Golfer of the Month, the 2019 Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year and the 2019 New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Amateur Player of the Year award.
Coming off arguably one of the best seasons in program history, RU finished 86th out of the 294 Division I teams nationally, according to GolfStat, and 79th in the country according to golfweek.com. The final GolfStat ranking was the seventh-best team result in the Big Ten Conference, as Rutgers closed the regular season in the top-half of the league rankings for the first time since joining in 2014. The Scarlet Knights' 288.74 scoring average was a program record.
