Rutgers Continues To Excel in Academic Progress Rate

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  –  Following the announcement of seven Rutgers Athletics programs earning public recognition from the NCAA for multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores last week, it was announced on Tuesday that the average multiyear APR rate for Rutgers Athletics is 990, seven points above the NCAA average of 983.

The announcement marks the fourth consecutive year that the Scarlet Knights have achieved a multiyear score of 990 or better. Twelve of 22 programs posted multiyear APR scores of 990 or better with 10 programs achieving a score of 995 or higher.

"Continued proof that academic success remains our highest priority," said Athletic Director Pat Hobbs. "We take great pride in our student-athletes' success in the classroom and appreciate the support they get from the faculty, their advisors and coaches in making that happen."

Nine Rutgers programs either tied (women's cross country 1000, men's golf 1000, women's golf 1000, gymnastics 1000, women's lacrosse 1000, tennis 1000, volleyball 1000, women's track & field 994) or set (softball 997) program records for multiyear APR rate.

Rutgers was third in the 14-member Big Ten Conference in number of programs to earn NCAA recognition. Nine of RU's 22 teams are among the top 30% of Big Ten programs in APR respective to sport. In addition to the seven programs that received recognition and are at the top of the Big Ten, men's track & field posted the league's top score (1st/13) with softball (T-2nd/14) posting a score among the league's best.  Eighteen teams either improved or remained constant in their position ranking among Big Ten peers relative to sport.

Seven Rutgers programs earned perfect single-year APR scores of 1000 for 2018-19. The average multi-year APR rate for women's programs "On the Banks" was 995.

All Rutgers University athletic programs are well above the 930 benchmark required by the NCAA.

The report is based on NCAA Division I APR data submitted by the institution for the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
