ST. FLORIAN, AUSTRIA – Rising sophomore Anna-Maria Diederichs finished second at the Austrian International Amateur Open, held over the weekend at the Linz-St. Florian Golf Club in St. Florian, Austria. Diederichs carded a 12-under-par 276 (70-70-70-66) during the four-round event, as she produced a total of 19 birdies and an eagle to highlight her impressive result.
Starting the final round in third place, Diederichs fired off a six-under-par 66 with seven birdies during her last 18 holes of play to move past the world's No. 1 ranked amateur, Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (France) for second in the highly-competitive field. Diederichs finished just behind Emma Spitz (Austria), who is currently No. 13 in the world rankings.
With a current world ranking of 1,032 that is expected to go up significantly after this weekend's performance, Diederichs' play throughout the summer has earned her an invitation to the 117th Annual Women's Amateur Championship, held from Aug. 25-29 at the West Lancashire Golf Club in Liverpool, England.
"My putting was strong this week which helped me actually take advantage of the birdie chances I gave myself through good approach shots," Diederichs said. "I also relied heavily on my putting in the second round to hold my round together as I struggled a bit with and had to make a lot of par saves.
"Most importantly, I really did not try to force anything this week and just enjoyed my game, which kept me calm under pressure and made it possible for me to climb the leaderboard on the last day even though I was five shots back. As a team, we have worked this summer on better understanding the mental aspect of the game and our discussions together gave me a sense of confidence to take out onto the course with me."
Diederichs enjoyed an impressive rookie season in 2019-20 for Rutgers women's golf. The Düsseldorf, Germany native competed in seven tournaments for the Scarlet Knights with a season-low 70 (-2) at the Marilyn Smith Invitational and a season-best finish of third (72-72-75) at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational. Diederichs finished her freshman campaign with a 75.95 scoring average.
