HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Junior
Leigha Devine came in under par to highlight play for Rutgers women's golf after the first round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Friday in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Competing in her home state for the second consecutive tournament, Devine produced a one-under-par 71 and is tied for 14th with two rounds to play.
"It was a good opening round for us," said head coach
Kari Williams. "We left a few shots out there with our putting on these quick greens. I saw the team find ways to save pars out there and they worked hard to keep their rounds together. Tomorrow we will come out with a chance to compete hard and move up the leaderboard."
The Scarlet Knights were also cheered on in person by former head coach Jan Unger, who helped RU become an intercollegiate sport at the University in 1977 and led the team from 1978-1995.
Rutgers is tied for 10th with their five-over-par 293. Eastern Tennessee State leads the field with its 17-under-par 271, followed by host Denver (-3) and Grand Canyon (-2). ETSU's Hollie Muse is atop the leaderboard with her seven-under-par 65 in the opening round.
After Devine, senior
Maeve Rossi carded a one-over-par 73 to tie for 33rd after round one. Junior
Sun Hwang (74), and sophomore
Rikke Nordvik (75) and rookie
Lucrezia Rossettin (75) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 42nd and 52nd, respectively.
"It's great to be back in Colorado for our last event," Devine said. "This course sets up well for my game with a lot of scoring opportunities. My recovery shots and scrambling today kept me in it. These greens are tough but we are all getting more comfortable with every hole that we play."
The second round beginns tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. ET.
