UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers women's basketball (4-7, 0-2) dropped a see-saw battle featuring eight ties and 16 lead changes at Penn State (5-5, 1-1) in Big Ten action on Thursday evening at the Bryce Jordan Center.
It was a game of runs for both teams, but the Lady Lions had the final say on their home court with a 7-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter to regain the lead for good. Rutgers led 44-42 with 5:46 left in the game.
The Scarlet Knights had four players in double-figures for the second consecutive game, led by
Tyia Singleton's 12 and a season-high 11 from
Sakima Walker.
Osh Brown and
Shug Dickson each added 10 points, while Brown got her second Rutgers double-double with 10 rebounds (NCAA active career leading 51
st) and Dickson led in assists with five.
Rutgers dominated the boards 35-23 and outshot Penn State, 44 to 43 percent. Penn State countered with an 18-9 edge in points off turnovers stemming from 22 RU miscues and leading in the remainder of specialty statistics (points on the fast break, second chance, and off the bench).
- Five different Scarlet Knights scored as RU assisted five of its six baskets in a back-and-forth first that saw five ties and six lead changes. Penn State led by three at 16-13.
- Rutgers used an 8-0 run to take a 23-20 lead, capped by consecutive Singleton buckets, but the Lady Lions answered with a three-point play and another basket as the 5-0 put the advantage back in Penn State's favor, 25-23.
- Shug Dickson sparked a 7-0 Rutgers run with a three-ball, followed by another personal 4-0 spurt by Singleton to take a 31-27 edge midway through the third. Penn State again had the answer with a matching 9-0 stint to regain momentum at 36-31. Osh Brown made a free throw and Sakima Walker finished a layup to set the 40-36 score in Penn State's favor heading into the final quarter.
- Another Shug Dickson three-pointer and a Walker basket finished a 8-0 Rutgers run spanning quarters, eventually stretching to an 11-2 run after Brown's midrange jumper and a Walker free throw put RU ahead 44-22 before Penn State's deciding 7-0 answer on consecutive three-pointers and a free throw.
- Rutgers had four players in double-figure scoring for the second consecutive game, the first two of the season.
- The Scarlet Knights assisted 18 of their 21 baskets, the best percentage since 21-of-22 on opening night against Saint Peter's.
- The Scarlet Knights held Penn State 23 points under their season scoring average. Rutgers has held opponents under their scoring average in 28 of its last 30, and 115 of its last 125 dating back to 2017-18.
- Shug Dickson has scored an average of 12.7 points per game over the past three contests, notching double-figures in all three, reaching double-digits for the 43rd time in her career.
- Osh Brown (10 points, 10 rebounds) recorded her second double-double of the season and the 51st of her career, the NCAA active career lead. She also added to her NCAA active career leading 1,214 rebounds.
- Double-figure scoring career marks: Brown (74th), Singleton (6th), Walker (3rd).
- Rutgers is undefeated at 4-0 when outscoring opponents in points off turnovers and points on the fast break. RU is now 0-7 when trailing in those specialty categories.
- The Starting 5 of Jailyn Mason, Shug Dickson, Lasha Petree, Tyia Singleton, and Osh Brown took the opening tip for the fourth consecutive game. It is the seventh different starting variation employed by acting head coach Timothy Eatman this season.
- RU holds a 30-19 advantage over Penn State in the all-time series dating back to 1977, including an 11-2 record as Big Ten opponents. The Penn State win snapped a Rutgers six-game win streak in the series.
Rutgers returns home for a game against Delaware State on Sun., Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Jersey Mike's Arena.
