Gotterup Runner Up at Schenkel Invitational
Mar 21 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – Senior Christopher Gotterup added his first top-five finish of the spring with runner-up honors at the Schenkel Invitational on Sunday in Statesboro, Georgia. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year tied for second in the loaded 80-player field with his five-under-par 211 (71-69-71) at the Forest Heights Country Club. His tied-for-second result marks the eighth top-5 individual finish of his collegiate career and his highest finish since he claimed the Fighting Irish Classic on Oct. 8, 2019 in South Bend.
"I was able to play consistent all week," Gotterup said. "The last day was going to be tough due to the weather, so I knew if I could get myself in a good spot, I would be able to play well despite the conditions. Finishing second is a huge confidence boost. I've played well the last few tournaments but not as consistent as this weekend, so the second place finish is big heading into the rest of the season."
Battling wet conditions throughout Sunday's final round, Rutgers men's golf tied for seventh in the 13-team field with its 22-over-par 886 (298-289-299). No. 21 NC State captured the team title with its 25-under-par 839 (272-279-288), followed by host No. 40 Georgia Southern (+2) and Furman (+6). NC State's Benjamin Shipp won the individual title with his 16-under-par 200 (66-66-68)
Gotterup came in under par in all three of his rounds, which included a three-under-par 69 on Saturday sandwiched between one-under-par 71s on Friday and Sunday. The Little Silver, New Jersey, native finished the weekend with a team-high 11 birdies and an eagle on a par-5 during Saturday's second round.
"It was great to have Chris secure his best finish of the year," said head coach Rob Shutte. "He's been close in the first few stroke play events for us and has always been in contention, so it's good to see him work his way up to earn his second-place finish. It was tough out there today with all of the standing water on the greens, but we were able to get through it. Chris was able to use all different styles of his game to move up and gain momentum heading into our next couple of events."
Sophomore Luke Wells was the next best finisher for RU with his 225 (73-78-74), tied for 46th. Senior Oliver Whatley (227: 78-74-75) and rookie Rhett Sellers (228: 77-72-78) tied for 52nd and 58th, respectively, while sophomore Xavier Marcoux rounded out the team scorecard with a 241 (77-74-90). Competing as individuals, juniors Jack Doherty and Shayler Dance and sophomore Brendan Hansen tied for 61st, 64th, and 76th, respectively.
Rutgers returns to the links from April 2-3 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Charlotte, N.C.
