PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore back Allison Lynch of Rutgers women's soccer was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Lynch aided the backline in a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota, as well as recording an assist in the 2-1 win over Iowa.
In the victory against the Hawkeyes, Lynch assisted senior forward Amirah Ali's game winner in the 39th minute. It marked the second helper of her career. On the defensive side, Lynch anchored a backline that held Iowa to single digit shots on goal.
Lynch and the defense recorded its third shutout of the year on Sunday, holding Minnesota to two shots on goal and seven total shots in the game. Overall, Lynch and the backline have held their Big Ten opponents to single shots in six of eight games this year. All eight opponents have been held to single-digit shots on goal.
The Bridgewater, New Jersey, native claims the first weekly conference honor of her career with this week's defensive accolades. It marks RU's fourth player of the week award this season and second defensive player of the week recognition this year.
Lynch and the Scarlet Knights return to action on Thursday, March 25 with a trip to Nebraska.
