Low Rounds Highlight Final Day for Men’s Golf at Spartan Collegiate
Mar 09 | Men's Golf
SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Senior Oliver Whatley and sophomores Xavier Marcoux and Luke Wells all came in under par in the final round as Rutgers men's golf finished play at the loaded Spartan Collegiate, held Tuesday in Sea Island, Georgia. The Scarlet Knights carded a two-under-par 286 in round three to finish 10th in the 16-team field that featured three top-50 programs and seven Big Ten teams.
Marcoux exemplified the integrity that surrounds the game of golf and the program, as he self-reported an error on his scorecard Monday night. Though his first-round total score from round one was correct, two individual hole scores were flip-flopped, which resulted in his first round being disqualified. After he fired off back-to-back four-under-par 68 rounds to close out the tournament, his original seven-under-par 209 would have tied him for second in the 80-player field.
Iowa captured the Spartan Collegiate team trophy with its 13-under-par 851 (285-289-277), followed by No. 39 Notre Dame (852: 278-292-282) and No. 47 Georgia Southern (852: 291-280-281). Iowa's Mac McClear earned individual honors with his 10-under-par 206 (66-75-65).
Wells tied for 18th with his one-under-par 215 (75-69-71) to lead Rutgers, as Wells, Marcoux and senior Christopher Gotterup all came in under 70 during Monday's second round to help the Scarlet Knights produce the second-lowest 18-hole team result of the tournament. Gotterup, who at one point was second in the field after his five-under-par second round 67, tied for 23rd (217: 73-67-77).
Whatley fired off a two-under-par 70 to move up to 51st with a 222 (78-74-70), while sophomore Brendan Hansen tied for 72nd with his 234 (81-75-78). Rutgers rolled in 27 birdies over three rounds and Wells added an eagle on a par 5 in the third round.
Rutgers next competes at the Schenkel Invitational from March 19-21 in Statesboro, Georgia.

Golf can be a tough, cruel game but it's all about how you respond!
