Arella Guirantes Picked by LA Sparks in the WNBA Draft

Scarlet Knight star bolsters the RU-to-WNBA pipeline by becoming the 21st C. Vivian Stringer product to be drafted

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Arella Guirantes, one of the most decorated and prolific student-athletes in Rutgers women's basketball history, has been selected 22nd overall in the second round of the 2021 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday evening live on ESPN.

Guirantes becomes the 21st Scarlet Knight under head coach C. Vivian Stringer to be selected in the WNBA Draft since the inaugural class of 1997. She joins fellow Rutgers alum Erica Wheeler in Los Angeles, who went undrafted before claiming the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game MVP.

The Bellport, New York native scored 1,676 career points in college and is a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection. Her final season "On the Banks" featured prominent national watch lists: A finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, the Hall of Fame Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, and the Dawn Staley Award, and a semifinalist for the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy for National Player of the Year, and Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.

She graduates as the only player in Rutgers history to record a season of 20+ points, 6+ rebounds, and 3+ assists per game, a feat she produced in consecutive campaigns in 2019-20 and 2020-21. She owns two of just six recorded 20-or-more point season averages under Hall of Fame head coach C. Vivian Stringer during her 50-year career.
