Nebraska Spoils Softball's Home Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Nebraska Cornhuskers spoiled the Rutgers softball team's homecoming on Friday afternoon defeating the Scarlet Knights 12-3 in their 2021 home opener at the Rutgers Softball Complex.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Gabrielle Callaway and Megan Herka both took the ball deep for the new field's first home runs.
  • Callaway finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Herka was 1-for-2 on the afternoon.
  • Payton Lincavage added the game's other run and was 1-for-2 for the day with a triple.
  • Izzy Berouty totaled 2.2 innings of work in the loss, while Ashley Hitchcock threw 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Nebraska jumped out with a pair of runs to open the game. Leadoff Rylie Unzicker managed to steal home for the first run and an RBI single to left for Peyton Glatter gave the Cornhuskers the early 2-0 lead.
  • Rutgers cut the deficit in half at the bottom of the inning as Callaway took the first pitch over the fence to left-center.
  • The Cornhuskers, however, added runs in each of the next four innings to pull away. Brooke Andrews had a three-run shot to center in the third and Courtney Wallace connected on a three-run dinger to left in the fourth for the visitors to take an 8-1 advantage.
  • Herka went deep to center field in the bottom of the fourth to give Rutgers its second run of the day.
  • Both squads added a score in the fifth. Billie Andrews knocked in a run of a single to center for Nebraska, while Lincavage tripled to right and came home on a double by Callaway down the left-field line for Rutgers.
  • Nebraska tacked on three more in the top of the sixth. Brooke Andrews added another two runs off her second home run of the game and Billie Andrews added the final run on an extra-base hit to left.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Callaway, currently riding a five-game hitting streak, and Herka both registered their second home runs of the 2021 season.
  • Lincavage notched her first career triple.
