The Scarlet Knight boat defeated No. 6 Michigan to set the tone for a successful team weekend at the Big Ten Invitational
ROSEMONT, Ill. – Rutgers rowing's First Varsity 8 has been named the Big Ten Boat of the Week for its performance at the Big Ten Invitational on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio last weekend.
The Scarlet Knights Varsity 8 crew opened a teamwide successful weekend by beating No. 6 Michigan by 1.5 seconds, marking Rutgers' first-ever victory over a Wolverine boat, also finishing well ahead of No. 18 Washington State. The boat went on to defeat No. 12 Indiana by six seconds on Sunday, while also topping No. 20 Syracuse and No. 18 Washington State in the flight.
The Big Ten Boat of the Week is comprised of (from stroke to bow seats, then coxswain) Femke Paulis, Emma Hopkins, Hannah Heideveld, Meaghan Schneid, Luisa Neerschulte, Olivia Maxton, Emily Kean, Karin Brandner, and Emily Mahaffy.
The boat nearly remained undefeated on the season, but lost by just 0.6 seconds to No. 4 Virginia on Saturday at the Big Ten Invitational. The top Varsity 8 boat has won five races during the 2021 season.
The Scarlet Knights program claims its fifth conference Boat of the Week award since joining the Big Ten in 2015, all coming under fourth-year head coach Justin Price with one in 2018, three in 2019, and this week's honor. No awards were handed out in 2020.
Following 12 victories at the Big Ten Invitational against conference rivals and nationally ranked programs, No. 11 nationally ranked Rutgers expects to rise in the CRCA Coaches Poll on Wednesday. The program's highest national ranking is No. 10, set earlier this Spring. The Scarlet Knights will host Syracuse on Sunday, May 2 on Mercer Lake, the last tune-up before the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on May 16.
