Apr 28 | Women's Tennis
MADISON, WISC. - Rutgers tennis was edged by Maryland Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament hosted at Wisconsin. The Scarlet Knights were able to push three sets in two singles matches, but the Terrapins collected three singles wins and the doubles point with a final score of 4-2.
Redshirt senior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Daira Cardenas picked up the first doubles win by a score 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Maryland, however, followed up with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, taking the early lead with the doubles point.
The singles matches showed a strong effort from RU. Cochrane dominated her sets, winning 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. It marked the senior's fifth dual singles win of the year. Another win for Cardenas, clinching the second RU singles point at the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. It came in as her fourth dual singles win of her young career.
Junior Tess Fisher came out strong at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4 lead, but unfortunately fell short in the following two sets. Junior Sydney Kaplan lost in her opening set 6-4, but rallied back with a 7-5 win in the second set to push to a third before the match was clinched.
The Scarlet Knights close out the season with four Big Ten victories, the most for RU since joining the league. Two of those victories came against Maryland in the regular season, as well as wins over Michigan State and Indiana.
