Knights in the NWSL: Pogarch and Portland Thorns Crowned 2021 Challenge Cup Champions

PORTLAND, ORE. – Former Scarlet Knight Madison Pogarch and Portland Thorns FC were crowned champions of the 2021N ational Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Challenge Cup on Saturday, May 8 live on CBS. The Portland Thorns and NY/NJ Gotham FC, home to four Scarlet Knights, played to a 1-1 draw at Providence Park. The Thorns claimed the title with a 6-5 edge in penalty kicks.
Pogarch saw action in four of five games for Portland during the Challenge Cup, starting two. She played the full 90 minutes in wins over Chicago and Kansas City, as well as appearing in the draw with Houston and win over OL Reign.
Gotham's side (formerly known as Sky Blue FC) featured four former Scarlet Knights in Carli Lloyd, Erica Skroski, Kenie Wright and Taylor Alymer. Lloyd scored the equalizer in the 61st minute for Gotham, marking her second goal of the Cup for the club. .
The NWSL features a total of seven active Scarlet Knights, including Casey Murphy with NC Courage and Kristen Edmonds with Kansas City. The full schedule of the 2021 NWSL season has been announced and can be found by clicking here. The year will continue with matches beginning on Saturday, May 15.
