PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers seniors Justin Davidovicz (football) and Sophia Catuogno (rowing) have been named the 2021 recipients of the Big Postgraduate Scholarship.
Each year, two student-athletes competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions planning to continue their education at a graduate degree program are each awarded a $7,500 scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
Davidovicz, an applied science engineering major, appeared in 42 career games handling the placekicking and kickoff duties for Rutgers football. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, he was named to the 2020 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list. Davidovicz converted on 20 of 26 field goals, including a career-long 52 yarder and was a perfect 35-for-35 on extra points. The Bridgewater, New Jersey native will pursue graduate work in packaging engineering, a field Davidovicz has already excelled in working for Johnson & Johnson in 2020, when he evaluated passive temperature control shipping solutions for the company's COVID-19 vaccine. Davidovicz will earn a master's degree in supply chain management.
Catuogno is a member of the women's rowing Second Varsity 8 boat that qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2019, and followed the effort up in 2021 with multiple victories over other nationally ranked crews, including No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 12 Indiana, and No. 18 Washington State. Catuogno is a College Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and has been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honors society while studying chemical and biochemical engineering at Rutgers. The Freehold, New Jersey native will enter a masters program in chemical and biomedical engineering at Rutgers, where she has also served as a READI (Rutgers Educational and Athletic Development Initiative) engineering field leader and mentor.
