PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior captains Amirah Ali and Gabby Provenzano were named All-Region First Team by United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Tuesday. The duo add this recognition to All-Big Ten First Team and Big Ten All-Tournament Team accolades this season.
Ali and Provenzano captained the team to an overall record of 9-3-4, a Big Ten mark of 6-2-3, and an undefeated mark of 5-0 at home. The pair helped push RU to its second straight Big Ten semifinal and ninth straight NCAA Tournament.
Ali, a two-time All-American, four-time All-Region and four-time All-Big Ten honoree, led the team with 15 points (7g, 1a) this spring. Of Ali's team-high seven goals, four were gamewinners, including one in overtime to extend her program record to nine career golden goals. The Voorhees, New Jersey, native was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist for the second straight season. The trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
The two-time team captain was named to the 2020-21 Big Ten All-Tournament team, having helped lift RU to the semifinals for the second straight season and fourth time overall since joining the league in 2014. Her efforts on the field also pushed RU to its ninth straight NCAA Tournament this season, marking the 11th in the last 13 years and 15th overall. Ali scored the gamewinner in the 1-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the First Round, advancing RU to the Second Round for the first time since 2017.
Provenzano claimed her first All-Region accolade, following a All-Big Ten First Team nod earlier this season. The captain anchored a backline that posted seven shutouts, while holding all 16 opponents to just single-digit shots on goal. The senior back started all 16 games on the year for a total of 62 career starts. She played every minute of match time for a total of 1550 minutes which included six overtime matches. The Sargeantsville, New Jersey, native registered a goal and an assist as well for RU, including the gamewinner in the 1-0 win at Purdue. Provenzano was tabbed a Big Ten All-Tournament selection, aiding RU in two shutouts on Big Ten Regional weekend to advance RU to its second straight semifinal appearance.
The three-time Academic All-Big Ten and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar was also named Rutgers' Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. An award bestowed to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
